Let’s Get Real About Shopping Local

July 8, 2015 Posted by Tracey - No Comments

I have to admit that even though I’m a local business owner in Durham Region, sometimes those Facebook appeals to shop local (you know the ones) make me feel guilty as a consumer…like the whole regional economy is going to collapse if I dare set foot in a big box store. Or what if a client ever saw me do that? More guilt.

Well…for those of us who like a few numbers attached to the emotional plea: I found this quote from Kyle Piira from last October:

“A study conducted by the American Self-reliance Company Partnership located that out of every $100 spent in a neighborhood business, practically 50% goes back to the regional economic climate, versus only $13 for each $100 invested at a nationwide chain.”

I get it that the big box stores employ local people but how much better would it be if those peeps could be employed by local businesses? Imagine how strong and powerful Durham Region (or any region) could be.

I know there is a lot more to this topic and we all have an opinion but this won’t be a long winded post, just another thought on the subject.
